mere goodness

Before I went to bed last night I read "Salvatore the Fisherman's Son" by Somerset Maugham (from the short story collection "Cosmopolitans"). The short story ended with a sentence about the "mere goodness" of an ordinary Italian fisherman who goes through a lot of painful things.
